US Constitution Second Amendment vs. Restraining Orders

February 11th, 2009 No comments

Gun control laws are likely to be a topic of further discord under the Obama Administration. The US Constitution Second Amendment states:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Over the years, some of the federal cases involving 2nd amendment law found that there was no individual right to bear arms but that instead the right belongs to the States. Other decisions found the right to bear arms is an individual right accorded to the people of the United States, not merely to the States.

Brain Scans on Borderlines Show Emotional Oversensitivity

February 11th, 2009 No comments

(Click here for more coverage of Borderline Personality Disorder.)

Recent estimates are that about 6% of the US population suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. The condition typically results in a range of symptoms involving emotional instability, lack of empathy for others, and increased suicidality with about 10% of Borderlines suffering death by suicide.

On January 17, 2009, Dr. Harold Koenigsberg of Mount Sinai School of Medicine announced his team’s findings that functional MRI scans of adults diagnosed with BPD show they have significant and detectable differences in brain operation versus adults without BPD.

Swedish Mother Kidnaps Australian Boys

February 10th, 2009 1 comment

Swedish mother Ann-Louise Valette is wanted on child abduction charges for the parental kidnapping of her sons Frank and Andre. She is believed to have been hiding them in Sweden, but it is not certain if they are still there as Swedish police have been unable to locate them. Valette violated court orders to put the boys on an October 9, 2008, airplane flight to return them to their father in Melbourne, Australia.

Andre Nicholas Valette age 9 (left) and Frank Oliver Valette age 11 (center) have been missing since they visited their mother Ann-Louise Valette (right) in Sweden.

Erin Pizzey, Domestic Violence Pioneer

February 9th, 2009 2 comments

Another of my favorite “real feminist” authors is Erin Pizzey. She was a pioneer in domestic violence activism, in 1971 setting up the Chiswick Refuge in London, UK as one of the first shelters for battered women in the world.

Early on in her work at Chiswick, she noticed that many of the women coming to her shelters were “violence prone”. They sought out abusive relationships and committed a significant amount of violence themselves. Often their violent ways triggered their partner’s abuses against them. Worse, these families raised their children to be a new generation of abusers addicted to violent behaviors.

Color The Memories Custom Coloring Books

February 8th, 2009 1 comment

We ran across this story in the Winter 2008 issue of USAA Magazine on page 7. For those of you who don’t know, USAA is an insurance and financial services company that specializes in serving active and retired military members and their current and former dependents.

The story goes that USAA member DaLonna Rimsky wanted a way to keep her kids thinking about their father who was overseas working in the Air Force. She came up with the idea of custom coloring books that are created using family photographs turned into coloring book line drawings. An example using one of her family photos is below.

Cell Phone Jamming Is Bad Idea

February 6th, 2009 3 comments

As the citizens of Western democracies pursue their inalienable right to flush all their civil rights down the toilet in the name of the global wars on terrorism and rudeness, fans of cell phone jamming technology have brought up how wonderful the world would be if your cell phone could be put out of service on demand of the appropriate authorities at the appointed times. Such authorities apparently include national security, military, and law enforcement agencies plus movie theater and restaurant owners and religious zealots.

Dirty Divorce Tactics: Theft by Car Loan

February 5th, 2009 No comments

We’ve all heard of divorcing people who financially victimize the ex by draining bank accounts and maxing out credit cards. Another frequent tactic is the fraudulent restraining order complete with a kick-out order to remove the victim from the house. That allows community and personal property to be seized by the liar with little to no recourse for the victim. And that is frequently accompanied by financial orders for the victim to keep paying for the home in which he or she can’t live any more.

Recently, we heard of a new and innovative financial abuse tactic, the car loan. How this works is that a lying fraud-perpetrating divorcing party gets a car loan on a car that has already been fully paid and was awarded to the other party.

Obesity Spread By Virus

February 4th, 2009 No comments

It’s possible to “catch the fat” as one cause of obesity is a contagious human virus. While viral-induced obesity is not the only way people become obese, it is apparently a widespread and significant cause.

The human virus Ad-36, a member of the adenovirus family, spreads via airborne means and infects the lungs first, much like the common cold virus. Then it spreads to the rest of the body. It has symptoms similar to the cold, such as sore throats. Worse, it apparently forces fat cells to multiply throughout the body, leading to an estimated 3 months of weight gain before the body mounts an effective defense to the virus.
