Master Cleanser is a detox program created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941 and made famous (and infamous) by celebrities, such as Beyoncé, Robin Quivers, Gweneth Paltrow and Jared Leto. Because of its large use of lemons and maple syrup, it is also known as the Lemon Cleanse, the Lemonade Diet or the Maple Syrup Diet.

The program can be done for 10 up to 40 days (yikes!) with the main ingredients being the juice of organic lemons, organic maple syrup (preferably Grade B), and cayenne pepper mixed with distilled water. A herbal laxative tea like Senna and a sea salt water solution is also consumed on a daily basis to help the cleansing and detoxifying process.

Sound enticing? How could this possibly be healthy or nutritious? And why would anyone in their right mind want to drink lemon and salty water for 10 days?

According to the little yellow Master Cleanser book, Stanley Burroughs explains that the purpose of his cleanse (or any cleanse or detox program for that matter) is:

  • To dissolve and eliminate toxins and congestion that have formed in any part of the body.
  • To cleanse the kidneys and the digestive system.
  • To purify the glands and cells throughout the entire body.
  • To eliminate all unusable waste and hardened material in the joints and muscles.
  • To relieve pressure and irritation in the nerves, arteries, and blood vessels.
  • To build a healthy blood stream.
  • To keep youth and elasticity regardless of our years.

And why the lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper?

Lemon juice helps to loosen and cleanse. With it’s 49% potassium content, it strengthens and energizes the heart as well.

Maple syrup must be used, as opposed to honey, as it is packed with minerals and vitamins: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, chlorine, silicon, vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, nicotinic acid (a form of B3), and pantothenic acid (a form of vitamin B5). It’s very important to not use an artificial substitute because it lacks these nutrients.

Cayenne pepper adds vitamin B and C and is also needed to help break up mucus. Because it is quite a hot spice, it increases the warmth of the body.

The combination of the three ingredients provides the body with enough vitamins and minerals while performing the functions of cleansing, eliminating, healing and building.

People who do this program usually experience extraordinary weight loss. Beyoncé (pictured on the right) lost 22 pounds while on a 14 day program. Although not a recommended way to lose weight, she did it for her role in the movie Dreamgirls (2006). You can read about some of the dangers here.

Like any diet program, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor first.
