The White Plains Journal News is a New York newspaper owned by Gannett which recently engaged in irresponsible journalism that could endanger the safety of the public. The newspaper staff has published the names and addresses of thousands of local handgun owners on its website in what appears to be an attempt to harass or intimidate gun owners.
While they try to claim they are somehow advancing the debate on gun control, fingering those who are licensed to legally own handguns who have not committed any crimes doesn’t do that. Instead, it creates a new treasure trove of information to be abused by criminals to harm innocent people.
Thanks to the White Plains Journal News, criminals who have access to a computer will now be able to improve their aim at targeting households for the crimes of their choice. They can go visit the web page, pick the county they want to target, and then go find the homes with handgun licenses.
Having a list of home addresses associated with licensed gun owners can be very valuable information for criminals in two ways. For criminals who want to steal handguns, now they know much more precisely what homes have them. For criminals who want to steal, rape, kill, or otherwise terrorize with less risk of accountability at the hands of a victim who has the means to defend himself or herself, now they have information that can aid them at selecting safer targets who are more likely to be unarmed and defenseless.
However, it is important to note that owners of rifles and other guns that are not handguns are not published on this list. So any enterprising computer literate criminal who decides an unlicensed house would make an easy target could end up facing down a homeowner with a shotgun, rifle, or semi-automatic “assault” rifle.
After this irresponsible newspaper stunt, anybody who doesn’t already own a handgun in Westchester or Rockland counties should consider buying a firearm because that second category of easier targets is not a group of which you should be happy to be a part. And for those in Putnam County — the Journal News is trying to obtain a list of handgun permits there with plans to publish that list, too. Putnam County, however, is attempting to refuse to provide its gun registration list containing over 11,000 handgun permit holders.
Journal News is not the only group publicizing gun permit holders. Despite the outrage over that incident, Gawker then published a 446 page long list of New York City gun permit holders . At least one person has claimed this has triggered renewed harassment against her by a former stalker.
Gun Control Laws Do Not Take Guns Out of Criminals’ Hands
The Australian experience with gun control in the past decade has shown that gun bans are good for criminals because these laws increase the number of unarmed or poorly armed targets who can be victimized with little risk. This makes crime a safer occupation.
Australians To US- Don’t Give Up Your Guns
Since the gun ban in Australia, armed robberies are up 69%, assaults with guns are up 28%, gun murders are up 19%, and home invasions are up 21%.
Gun control laws do not achieve what is publicly claimed to be their goals of taking guns out of the hands of criminals. In the US, about 75% of firearm murders are from gang-on-gang violence. These people are already largely convicted felons who are not legally allowed to have guns. Clearly more gun control laws aren’t going to help stop gun violence by keeping guns out of the hands of the criminals because those laws will be ignored by the criminals just the same as existing laws.
Perhaps the real goals of gun control laws are something else entirely?
You should consider the very government officials wanting to ban guns are usually criminals themselves. Be they murderous treasonous liars like Obama or one of the many other criminals in the US government, they all know that criminals like themselves benefit from gun bans because they maintain their access to guns while their victims lose them and much of their ability to defend themselves against illegal conduct by government employees as well as thieves, murders, rapists, and others who don’t work for the government.
Gun bans are the means to protect criminals, whether they are common street thugs or the government criminals, from their victims.
Gun Control Laws Lead to Human Rights Violations
As experiences in nations like Australia, United Kingdom, and the former Nazi Germany and Soviet Union show, gun bans embolden criminals to escalate attacks by reducing their fear of deadly accountability.
The newly emboldened criminals then trigger growing fear in law-abiding citizens via their increased criminal activity. This is then used by the governments to provide justification to take away more human rights as they build ever larger “security” forces to oppress their populations.
The sheeple are often duped into approving of growing tyranny because they realize they cannot protect themselves as well from common street thugs because the government has taken their guns away. So they often buy into the argument that the government’s bands of armed criminals in the police forces and military will somehow “protect” them by showing up in time to stop a murder, robbery, rape, or arson. But cops seldom arrive while a crime is in progress. They show up to collect victims’ dead bodies and after-the-fact evidence.
Cops these days spend more time criticizing and harming victims of real crime or shooting innocent people and animals than they do chasing and shooting criminals. Cops and soldiers are employed to protect the government, not the people. While those of us who actually follow our oaths to protect and defend the US Constitution might think we would do so if push comes to shove, the truth is that few cops or soldiers are going to stand up for the little guy when their bosses and commanders are ordering them to do otherwise.
If you doubt that US government employees sworn to uphold the US Constitution will use threats of violence and violence itself to oppress peaceful opponents and true victims of crime, just look at how the US government organized political repression against the Occupy movement in 2012. The FBI and DHS, working on behalf of the Domestic Security Alliance Council of private mega-corporations such as Citibank, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, and many others plus their political allies, coordinated attacks across the US in 2012 by using violence, arrests, and intimidation to silence opponents of the corporatist-fascist US government fronted by Barack Obama.
These stories and associated documents reveal that the US government even resorted to “redacted” assassination threats against Occupy Wall Street leaders and wrongly treated them as terrorists to intimidate and hinder them.
With Chinese government controlled media also calling for the disarmament of Americans, perhaps the American government thinks it is in good company with another totalitarian regime in calling for curtaining or banning of gun ownership.
Besides Americans who distrust government, even some Russians are cautioning that Americans should not give up their guns so easily. One Russian blogger points out that freedom to own weapons is one of the few things to admire about today’s USA . He recounts how the Communists lied to the citizens to keep them from fighting against their control and then promptly murdered many of them under the excuse of “gun registration”:
Moscow fell, for example, not from a lack of weapons to defend it, but from the lying guile of the Reds. Ten thousand Reds took Moscow and were opposed only by some few hundreds of officer cadets and their instructors. Even then the battle was fierce and losses high. However, in the city alone, at that time, lived over 30,000 military officers (both active and retired), all with their own issued weapons and ammunition, plus tens of thousands of other citizens who were armed. The Soviets promised to leave them all alone if they did not intervene. They did not and for that were asked afterwards to come register themselves and their weapons: where they were promptly shot.
Of course being savages, murderers and liars does not mean being stupid and the Reds learned from their Civil War experience. One of the first things they did was to disarm the population. From that point, mass repression, mass arrests, mass deportations, mass murder, mass starvation were all a safe game for the powers that were. The worst they had to fear was a pitchfork in the guts or a knife in the back or the occasional hunting rifle. Not much for soldiers.
Newspaper Staff Exposed
Oddly, the newspaper reporter who invaded handgun owners’ privacy, Dwight Worley, is a licensed gun owner himself. But because his permit was issued in another county outside of the Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties his employer decided to target, perhaps he thought he would get away with this without his address being listed for the public and criminals to peruse.
Blogger Christopher Fountain has decided to turn the tables on the irresponsible jerks at the newspaper. He’s published the names and addresses of several Journal News employees including editor Cynthia Lambert, publisher Janet Hasson, reporter Dwight Worley, and web site “visual editor” Robert Rodriguez.
The newspaper has now hired armed guards to patrol its facilities, hypocritically showing that guns might in fact have a useful purpose.
Although the local police have apparently not found any credible threat made against the Journal staff, they have nonetheless hired armed patrolman until the attention dies down, it would seem. Meanwhile, they say they aren’t done just yet trying to advance debate on gun control: officials in nearby Putnam County say they will not comply with the Journal News’ request for pistol permit holders there, but the paper is expected to appeal.
What Can You Do?
Now that you have seen proof that being a registered gun owner means you can be targeted for harassment by the media, perhaps you can see why gun registration laws may also be counterproductive. What can you do to protect yourself?
For starters, you should join the boycott of Gannett Company media outlets including numerous newspapers such as USA Today and The Arizona Republic, 23 TV stations (mostly affiliates of ABC, CBS, and NBC), and many web sites and digital media properties. There are more than 1000 newspapers under Gannett ownership , with their traditional media properties operating in 41 US states. Cancel your subscriptions and quit watching their stations.
Secondly, you should consider that it may not be safe to register firearms in the US any more. You may be better off obtaining firearms without background checks and registration such as by purchasing them from private sellers who are not required to report sales. You might also consider registering guns with information that cannot be used to hunt you down or publicly attack you as Journal News and Gawker have done to New York gun owners.
