April 12, 2010 is the last day of the latest Life Extension Overstock Sale. Overstock sales are a great way for people who are thinking about joining Life Extension to try out their products and service before spending $75 (the typical annual fee) for signing up as a member as they are one of the few times nonmembers can buy products at the same price as members.

Life Extension Overstock Sale - Save up to 75%

“Last Year’s Models” At Discounts Up to 75%

Life Extension updates many of its formulations every year. Their overstock sales usually involve heavy discounts on the older formulations. These older formulations are still often equivalent or better than many other companies are selling and are often much less expensive than the updated formulations.

Old vs. New Super Omega-3 Fish Oil

For instance, consider the old versus new formulations of the Super Omega-3 Fish Oil with Olive and Sesame Extracts. The old version is priced at $12.80 per bottle (any quantity for members and nonmembers) during the overstock sale, the new version is $32.00 per bottle in quantity one for nonmembers to as low as $18.68 in quantity 10 for members. Any way you look at it, the old version is far less expensive.

So you’re probably wondering — what’s the difference? Besides the price and item number, the only difference is that the new version uses a more concentrated olive extract.

Old Version
Polyphen-Oil™ Olive (Olea europa) Fruit Extract [std. to 4.5% total polyphenols (13.5 mg), 0.7% hydroxytyrosol (2.1 mg), 0.3% oleuropein (0.9 mg) and 0.5% verbascoside (1.5 mg)]

New Version
Polyphen-Oil™ Olive (Olea europa) Fruit Extract [std. to 1.5% hydroxytyrosol (4.5 mg), 0.7% oleuropein (2.1 mg), 0.5% verbascoside (1.5 mg) and 0.23% tyrosol (0.7 mg)]

Other than this, they are identical. Both are double-strength fish oil capsules with sesame lignans and very low cholesterol levels that are much better than many other fish oil products on the market. See our comparison article Bargain on Top-Notch Mega EPA/DHA Omega-3 Fish Oil and scroll down midway for a handy comparison chart. Then consider the cost is $12.80 per bottle versus $18.68, putting in very close to the price of the inferior Costco Kirkland double-strength fish oil product that has 2.5 times the cholesterol and lacks the sesame lignans and olive extract.

Old vs. New Optimized Resveratrol

Similarly, Life Extension updated their 250mg resveratrol product by adding a new ingredient call pterostilbene which works together with resveratrol to active more “longevity genes” that improve cellular function. The old version didn’t have pterostilbene and to date very few other companies are incorporating this ingredient in their resveratrol products.

The new version adds 0.5mg (500mcg) of Trans-Pterostilbene (as pure Pterospan™ and SMART™† pterostilbene), an amount they say is equivalent to that in over 20 cups of blueberries. That’s the only difference in ingredients. The price difference, however, is again large. The old version costs $18.40 per bottle, the new version ranges from $46.00 per bottle quantity one for nonmembers to $31.00 per bottle quantity four for members.

Given that some studies are suggesting 250mg of trans-resveratrol per day (or more) may be needed for full effect and that many companies sell “resveratrol” without specifying whether it is the trans or cis form, you’d likely be better off buying the old version from Life Extension than pretty nearly any other resveratrol product on the market if you’re trying to maximize your “bang for the buck”.

Note that I did find one other company selling a resveratrol product with pterostilbene that has less trans-resveratrol but more pterostilbene.
